Many exciting things are happening in MTC Engineering. Students are actively using the Design Engineering Process to innovate and solve problems. The second and third grade engineers are currently planning and creating Marble Roller Coasters. The students were divided into teams in which they delegated jobs. They used their imagination to brainstorm different possibilities, joined these ideas to create one team plan and built their best roller coaster. They learned about potential and kinetic energy and used these skills to create the momentum needed to move the marble around the track and into the final destination. Using pool noodles, paper tubes, cups, tape, toothpicks, and other simple supplies, students created hills and turns. As students built their coasters, they encountered obstacles and were forced to improve their plan as they went. Many students learned to bank their turns so that the marble did not jump the track. The short video below shows a team’s Marble Roller Coaster in action.
Students enjoyed sharing their designs and discussing their challenges and break-throughs. Student had fun being Civil Engineers! Next week we will become Environmental Engineers. Mrs. Dwinnell cannot wait to see the new ideas her Engineers will come up with. : )
